Kegiatan aktifitas kelompok melalui terapi aromaterapi minyak kayu putih dan sereh untuk tekanan darah tinggi
Background: Hypertension remains a major public health issue and a leading cause of increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Often asymptomatic, the condition can lead to serious complications such as heart disease and stroke if not managed effectively. Hypertension management is not limited to pharmacological therapy; it can also involve non-pharmacological approaches, including complementary therapies. One such option is aromatherapy using cajuput oil and lemongrass, which exerts a relaxing effect on the nervous system.
Purpose: To implement aromatherapy using cajuput oil and lemongrass as a means to lower blood pressure in individuals with hypertension.
Method: This community service initiative employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach, involving blood pressure measurements taken before and after the aromatherapy intervention. The activity took place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 09:30 WIB, at the Nursing Profession Student Community Service Program post in Hamlet 07, Mutun. Ten participants were selected via purposive sampling. A sphygmomanometer was used to measure the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of the respondents both before and after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by comparing blood pressure values pre- and post-intervention.
Results: All respondents experienced a decrease in blood pressure following the intervention. The mean systolic blood pressure dropped from 152.7 mmHg to 142.5 mmHg, while the mean diastolic blood pressure decreased from 95.3 mmHg to 90.3 mmHg. These findings indicate a positive effect of aromatherapy in helping to lower blood pressure.
Conclusion: This community service initiative, utilizing aromatherapy with cajuput oil and lemongrass, yielded positive results in helping to lower blood pressure among individuals with hypertension. Aromatherapy has a relaxing effect that can influence the nervous system and help stabilize blood pressure, making it a safe, accessible, and cost-effective non-pharmacological therapeutic alternative for the general public.
Suggestion: It is suggested that the public consider using aromatherapy with cajuput oil and lemongrass oil as a non-pharmacological approach to help manage blood pressure. This should be accompanied by consistent use and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, including a low-salt diet, regular physical activity, and stress management.
